Wheat harvest from A to Z

02 May 2023

Ahead is the sowing season for winter grains and rapeseed. And we want to remind our dear farmers of valuable agronomic information: when and how their crop is formed and how we can influence it at each stage.

Let’s consider winter wheat at each critical stage:

  1. FIRST STAGE:

Seed germination / emergence (ВВСН 0-13) – we can influence field emergence, dynamics of root system development, obtaining simultaneous and uniform emergence, and consequently, the initial density of plant stands through pre-sowing seed treatment with a complex of nutrients, humic and fulvic acids, phytohormones, and amino acids.

2. SECOND STAGE:

Leaf development (ВВСН 13-19). After emergence, following the completion of the tillering stage, the growth of the apical meristem continues. It is at this stage (2-3 leaves) that the lack of proper nutrition will result in the delay of node, internode, and leaf formation. Therefore, optimal stem growth, resistance to lodging, tillering, and development of secondary roots are established here.

3. THE THIRD STAGE:

Bushing (ВВСН 21-29) – the number of segments of the spike shaft and the length of the spike are formed – we can improve these indicators due to the use of nitrogen fertilizers with sufficient phosphorus-potassium agrophone and foliar feeding with trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mn).

4. THE FOURTH STAGE:

The beginning of emergence into the tube (ВВСН 30-32) – the number of ears in the ear – timely application of fertilizers can double the number of grains in the ear, therefore, balanced foliar feeding of NPK+ME and the use of biostimulants to optimize the nutrition system are important. After this stage, it is no longer possible to influence the size of the ear and the number of ears.

5. THE FIFTH STAGE:

Growth of the second internode (ВВСН 32-33) – laying of flowers in spikelets and spikelets. Optimizing nutrition during this period will lead to laying more developed flowers. When increasing their number to 4-5 in a spikelet, as opposed to the usual 2-3, it is possible to double the yield.

6. SIXTH STAGE:

Stalking (ВВСН 33-35). Formation and development of flowers. The differentiation of the ear ends. Optimum phosphorus nutrition, which has a positive effect on the development of generative organs, becomes more important.

7. THE SEVENTH STAGE:

End of growth of internodes (ВВСН 35-39). The density of the ear is formed, which is still in the sheath of the leaf. During this period, optimization of nutrition will help to avoid the phenomenon of loose ears.

8. THE EIGHTH STAGE:

Earing (ВВСН 51-59). The formation of spikes and flowers ends. The upper internode is growing. Timely nitrogen feeding will help to increase the content of protein and gluten.

9. NINTH STAGE:

Flowering (ВВСН 61-69). Growth of vegetative mass stops. It is possible to improve the passage of this stage by using anti-stress products, amino acids at the previous stage.

10. THE TENTH STAGE:

Grain formation (ВВСН 70-72). The grain acquires a finite length. If necessary, with a good photosynthetic surface and moderate moisture, we can use products containing nitrogen and amino acids to improve the quality characteristics of the grain.

11. ELEVENTH STAGE:

Milk ripeness (ВВСН 73-77). The mass of 1000 grains and the nature of the grain are formed. The thickness and width increases. By optimizing nutrition, we continue the activity of the photosynthetic apparatus. The use of amino acid products and complex nutrition is possible, provided that it is economically justified.

12. THE TWELFTH STAGE:

Wax maturity (ВВСН 83-87). The grain stops increasing in weight and size. Nutrients are converted into reserves.

So, summing up all of the above:
before flowering, we work on the quantity of harvest, after flowering – on quality!

🌾 Of course, it is clear that farms do not have the opportunity to enter the field for every phase of growth, but it is worth remembering these main points in order to make each of your treatments as effective as possible!
