Winter cereals: valuable tips!

09 February 2024

🌾 The period of active vegetation recovery for WINTER GRAIN CROPS is approaching.

📝 It’s time to recall valuable agronomic information: what and when can we do to maximize yields in this challenging season.

➡️ We will delve into detail about the techniques, timing, and how they can improve the situation, and you can choose the most optimal option based on your own situation and economic efficiency.

1️⃣ TILLERING (BBCH 21-29): Relevant for late sowings – the number of tillers in the ear and ear length are formed during this stage – we can improve these indicators by using basic nitrogen fertilizers with sufficient phosphorus-potassium agrofone and by foliar application of micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Mn).

Solution: foliar fertilization with NOVALON FOLIAR 10-45-15+0.5MgO+ME (rate 1-1.5 kg/ha); to enhance the effect and increase the concentration of necessary micronutrients, it can be combined with POWERFOL GRAIN (1 L/ha).

2️⃣ BEGINNING OF STEM ERECTION (BBCH 30-32): The number of spikelets in the ear is formed during this stage – timely fertilization can double the number of grains in the ear, so balanced foliar fertilization NPK+ME and the application of biostimulants to optimize physiological processes and plant resistance to stress factors are essential. After this stage, it’s impossible to influence the size of the ear and the number of spikelets.

Solution: foliar fertilization with NOVALON FOLIAR 10-45-15+0.5MgO+ME (rate 1-1.5 kg/ha) + biostimulant based on seaweed extract POWERFOL UNDARIA (0.5-1 L/ha) or POWERFOL FitoFarm (0.5-1 L/ha).

3️⃣ DEVELOPMENT OF SECOND NODE (BBCH 32-33): Flower primordia are laid in spikelets and ears. Optimizing nutrition at this stage will lead to the formation of more developed flowers. By increasing their number to 4-5 per spikelet, instead of the usual 2-3, it’s possible to double the yield.

4️⃣ STEM ELONGATION (BBCH 33-35): Formation and development of flowers occur, and ear differentiation is completed. Optimal phosphorus nutrition, which positively affects the development of generative organs, becomes more important.

5️⃣ END OF INTER-NODAL GROWTH (BBCH 35-39): Ear density is formed, which is still in the leaf sheath. Optimization of nutrition (including foliar fertilization) during this period will help avoid the phenomenon of loose ears.

Solution: foliar fertilization with NOVALON FOLIAR 20-20-20+0.5MgO+ME (rate 1.5-2 kg/ha).

6️⃣ BOOTING (BBCH 51-59): The formation of the ear and flowers is completed. Upper inter-nodal growth occurs. Timely nitrogen fertilization will help increase protein and gluten content.

Solution: complement basic nutrition with foliar fertilization NOVALON FOLIAR 20-20-20+0.5MgO+ME (rate 1.5-2 kg/ha) + anti-stress agent SPEEDFOL AMINO CALMAG (0.5-1 L/ha).

7️⃣ FLOWERING (BBCH 61-69): Vegetative mass growth ceases. Improving the passage of this stage is possible by using anti-stress products and amino acids in the previous stage.

8️⃣ GRAIN FILLING (BBCH 70-72): The grain acquires its final length. If necessary, products containing nitrogen and amino acids can be applied to increase the quality characteristics of the grain.

Solution: NOVALON FOLIAR 20-20-20+0.5MgO+ME (rate 1.5-2 kg/ha) + SPEEDFOL AMINO CALMAG (0.5-1 L/ha).

9️⃣ MILK RIPENING (BBCH 73-77): The mass of 1000 grains and the grain density are formed. The thickness and width increase. By continuing the activity of the photosynthetic apparatus through optimization of nutrition, it’s possible to use amino acid products and complex fertilization, provided it’s economically justified.

🔟 WAX MATURITY (BBCH 83-87): Grain filling ceases by mass and size. Nutrients are converted into reserves.

‼️ Summarizing all the above: BEFORE FLOWERING, WE WORK ON YIELD QUANTITY, AFTER FLOWERING – ON QUALITY!
